I was born and raised in Alexander, Iowa, a town of 168 people. I
am one of the owners of Latham Seeds, a soybean facility founded by my father that is located just outside of Alexander. My wife Kathy and I have three adult children and four grandchildren. I have served in the United States House of Representatives since 1995. I am a member of, and the only Iowan on, the powerful House Appropriations Committee. I sit on the Appropriations Subcommittees for Homeland Security, Agriculture, and Energy & Water. I serve on several Congressional Task Forces, including the Speaker’s Task Force for a Drug-Free America, the House Prescription Drug Action Leadership Team, and last year was named to the Congressional Task Force for Affordable Natural Gas. My daily goal is changing the way Washington works and changing the work that Washington does. I was raised on my family's farm with the Iowa traditions of hard work, community service, and strong values. I work in Congress for the promotion of individual liberty, economic opportunity, personal responsibility, and a smaller and smarter government. I believe in America, Iowa and her people. I can always see a great future in a nation that protects individual freedom and responsibility over that of an intrusive federal government that spends beyond its means. And, if we hold to these values, America's greatest days are yet to be seen. friends (1)favorite pages

It is not news that America has entered a nursing shortage. Last year over 118,000 nursing jobs were left unfilled. Employers want to hire, but the pool of qualified nurses just isn't big enough to fill all those jobs. What might be surprising is that nursing schools, the very programs delivering these qualified nurses to Iowa's hospitals, turned away more than 40,000 applicants last year alone. Why? Because they're full. The nursing shortage isn't the problem, it's the... (continue reading) American Heroes - The Red CrossPosted February 29th, 2008 at 02:30pm
March is the month we celebrate one of the truly great American charities: The Red Cross. This organization has been at the forefront of saving--and repairing--the lives of our nation's military personnel, their families, and those of us who have been affected by natural disasters for one-hundred-and-twenty-seven years. ` Here in Iowa, there are ten Red Cross chapters to be found throughout the state. The Red Cross was started in 1881 by... (continue reading) |
