Sarah Jean Music was founded in 2000. Within the year 2000, SJM had
signed a dist. agreement with Point of Grace Dist./Ground Level, and had released its first cd, Elijah Jackson Reminisce. SJM had solid sucess with this project. However because of limited dist. SJM decided it was time to go in a different direction. In 2001, Ceo/ and President of Sarah Jean Music, Carl Jackson decided not to release any other projects until he had better dist. for his artist. Being that Carl is a successful filmmaker, he was asked to direct a movie on high profile gospel legend Bobby Jones. Carl was very excited about this, and wanted to find a company to dist. the soundtrack, for the movie. Carl flew to L.A. to meet with then president of Gospocentric, Vicki Mack Lataillade, because she was interested in releasing the soundtrack. On his return flight to Dallas, Carl had a lay over in Arizona, at the airport he got a call from Tyscot President Bryant Scott. Bryant had already heard about the meeting with Vicki and wanted to place a bid, for the soundtrack. At that time, Carl needed better dist. for his label. Within that 5 min phone call, Carl became partners with Tyscot on the soundtrack of the movie, but also landed a dist. deal for his label Sarah Jean Music, with Tyscot. In 2002, SJM first major release under the new deal with Tyscot was Debette Draper, WALK ON GOLD. This album featured Angie Winans, from the first family of gospel, the Winans family, and the production team of Cedric and Victor Caldwell. (The Bodyguard soundtrack, Cece Winans, Smokie Norful, T.D. Jakes) Debette had moderate success, rave reviews, and even made the top 10 in some gospel radio markets, and no.1 in the Dallas Tx. gospel radio market. It also got a Steeple Nod. Michelle Williams of Destiny Child, re-recorded a song from Debette Drapers 2002 release. The song was entitled Rescue my Heart. Debette Also sanged Background vocals on Michelle version. In 2004 Tyscot was sold, and the label no longered offered dist. But Sarah Jean still had a home, Tyscot became partners in a new dist. company called Taseis. Taseis signed a deal with Ryco/WEA (Warner Bros.) for dist. on the mainstream side, and WORD on the CBA/Gospel side. Sarah Jean Music signed a new deal with Taseis, in 2004. We are still with Taseis today, and will be with them until 2010. Sarah Jean Music have signed, new artist and five time Apollo winner Cece Godbolt. SJM is also planning to release L.A. Mass Choir reunion album, Donald Taylor & L.A. Mass the Return, the Bobby Jones Movie soundtrack featuring Earth, Wind, & Fire, the Bobby Jones original movie score, and the long awaited new CD/DVD Carl Jackson featuring Anointed, Edwin Hawkins, Samaria, and Neverset. The DVD will feature music videos, and a film entitled CHURCH starring Irma P. Hall (Soul Food, Bad Company, Collateral with Jamie Foxx, The Bernie Mac show) Sarah Jean is the mother of Carl Jackson. Sarah Jean Davis Jackson was a musician, writer, singer, wife, mother, author and all around woman of God. She has written over 100 songs within her lifetime. She died May 1996, in a car crash coming from a prayer meeting, just seven days after her birthday, and only a few days after mothers day. A tribute cd will be release in her honor, on the 10 year anniversary of the Sarah Jean Music Label. friends (16)my gifts |
