personal message

Everyone calls me a career student. I've been a college student for 7 years. I started out in computer engineering and stopped just shy of my degree. It has taken a while to figure out where I need/want to be. I received my Bachelors in Religion from Southeastern Theological. I did some graduate work there in Divinity amounting to 21 or so hours, but I decided I didn't want to do that just yet. While there I developed an interest in overseas missions.

I don't like missions where it amounts to handing out gospel tracts the whole time. I wanted to be trained in something very practical to take onto the mission field, so I decided on medical school! My degree ill-prepared me for a science-based education. In fact I had no sciences at all... a major shortcoming of my school's curriculum! I am currently doing a lot of post-baccalaureate work in science so that I don't completely flub the MCAT -- that's the entrance exam for med. school. It's a pretty intense examination that tests many areas... biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, reading and writing. In addition to one's GPA, it seems to be one of the top 3 things looked at by admissions committees.

I'd really like to attend medical school at Wake Forest. I could live at home and not have to move for the 4th time for college. I don't look forward to having to uproot myself again. However, if that doesn't work out, UNC is my second choice, followed by Duke, ECU, Johns Hopkins, and Harvard.

I currently plan to specialize in pediatrics and more specifically in oncology(cancer). While oncology isn't something practical for the mission field, it's very practical in the states. After finishing my medical degree, I will either finish my current Masters or go directly to the field. I am leaning towards finishing the Masters, because I want to be as knowledgeable as reasonably possible before going. The networking and practical training will be very useful! From there I have many options... I could organize medical missions from the States and do short-term mission and relief work. I could also go to one place full-time and integrate into their society. I have a long ways to go before I have to make those decisions however. I'm pretty anxious though!

I just feel like my life is wasted and worthless if I'm soaking up American culture and living the 'good life' in the lap of luxury, while others are suffering tremendously around the world. Thus concludes my discourse on what I plan on doing with my life.

All seriousness aside, I'm not a dull, obsessively religious holy roller [No offense to any dull, obsessively religious holy rollers out there!! ;-) ]. I'm just a normal person trying to live a God-honoring life (and failing miserably thus far)... I'm sure everyone can relate to that. I try (emphasis on the try) to be real with people and not live behind the number of masks we tend to put on every day (Eleanor Rigby anyone? haha). I am usually cracking jokes, being sarcastic, making fun of something/someone, or finding other ways to jest with people! There's a time to laugh and a time to cry. Two of my favorite things to do are COOK and DRIVE. Both are very therapeutic to me! I think cooking is an art form... and driving also. haha I tend to get a little crazy doing both. I love driving fast down backwoods country roads with lots of curves and beautiful scenery.

If you suffered through that much and still find yourself interested, I would love to chat. It doesn't have to be related to any of that. I love talking theology, philosophy, religion in general, and sociology. However, most of the time I like to just goof off. I usually avoid those conversations in groups unless someone drags me into it or a person is truly interested. I'd also love to talk to any future/current doctors, nurses, or missionaries out there!

If you actually took the time to read this, I'll give you $20.
